Tales of a Master Mariner is a suite of music which follows the journey of a ship on a doomed voyage.

Inspired by, and dedicated to Captain Andrew Leachman and his wife Viv Leachman, the music imagines a voyage which begins calmly and ends in disaster, with the crew of the vessel travelling into a violent storm, drowning and being taken away by angels.

Kiwijahzz favourites Trioglodyte (Jeff Henderson, Chris O'Connor & Eamon Edmundsen-Wells) are joined by legendary NZ saxophone giant Roger Manins, and the talented guitarist/cellist Kat Tomacruz (heard on Jazz from the Underground Nightclubs of Aotearoa Vol. 2 & 6).

Best listened to as a seamless set, exactly how the music was performed and recorded.

Captain Andrew Leachman was an inspiring, gregarious man who was hugely supportive of young musicians in the New Zealand jazz scene. Andrew and Viv were tireless and enthusiastic fans of jazz music, and provided the most wonderful accommodation and hospitality to touring groups for decades.
Around the Leachman table one would be regaled with incredible stories of Andrew's dual passions - the sea and jazz. Stories including meeting Albert Ayler at a Miles Davis gig (where he bought one of the first copies of Spiritual Unity - signed by Ayler, Miles didn't want the record played in his set breaks), meeting the crew of the doomed ship 'Beserk' and warning them of an impending arctic storm (which did sink and destroy them), Antarctic adventures on the NIWA boat 'Tangaroa' and with the NZ Navy, meeting Ben Webster , practising his saxophone in the engine room of boats, discovering hundreds of species of fish...all told with gleeful wit and wild humour.
Andrew and Viv were like second parents to many who toured jazz in NZ - they are sadly missed and fondly remembered.
